power in emergencies
Taimyr local government officials report that there will be a meeting between interested parties taking place in Dudinka in the Taimyr region in order to discuss, ‘information on the construction of a new icebreaker, which will go into Dudinskiy port, the practical results of hydrometeorological support of navigation of ships along the Murmansk Norilsk Nickel-Murmansk-Dudinka, as well as the participation of Sovkomflot in Arctic voyages and the space monitoring of the Arctic territories.’ The meeting takes place under the coordination of Artur Chilingarov.
This follows on from a recent emergency exercise which involved the use of an ice-breaker to provide power to the port of Dudinka in the event of a power failure from regular municipal supplies.
This would also appear to be the purpose of the floating nuclear power plant (see here) a project, in a way, along with the demonstrable need to supply power to ports in this unorthodox way, highlights the difficulties involved in creating a viable infrastructure for the NSR. Dudinka is described in the articles as, ‘world’s only Arctic seaport’.
